Editorial biography
Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988) was a Swiss Catholic theologian and one of the most significant Christian thinkers of the twentieth century. Initially trained as a Germanist and philosopher, he became a Jesuit priest in 1936 before leaving the order in 1950 to found a secular institute. His monumental theological project centers on a theological aesthetics that recovers beauty as a transcendental alongside truth and goodness. His major work, the fifteen-volume trilogy comprising The Glory of the Lord (Herrlichkeit), Theo-Drama, and Theo-Logic, presents a comprehensive vision of Christian theology grounded in the self-revelation of God's glory. Balthasar emphasized the dramatic character of God's engagement with humanity through Christ and developed a theology of Holy Saturday that explores Christ's descent into hell. His work synthesizes patristic, medieval, and modern sources while engaging contemporary philosophy and literature, significantly influencing Catholic theology's renewal after Vatican II.
