Editorial biography
Henry Margenau (1901–1997) was a German-American physicist and philosopher of science who spent most of his career at Yale University, where he was Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics and Natural Philosophy. Trained in theoretical physics, he made contributions to quantum mechanics and intermolecular forces before turning increasingly to the philosophy of science, particularly questions of measurement, scientific epistemology, and the metaphysical implications of modern physics. His major work, The Nature of Physical Reality (1950), developed a distinctive epistemology in which scientific constructs are validated through correspondence with empirical data via 'rules of correspondence,' anticipating later debates about scientific realism. In later decades Margenau increasingly engaged questions of religion and science, arguing that quantum mechanics and contemporary cosmology are compatible with—and in some respects supportive of—belief in a divine intelligence. He co-edited with Roy Abraham Varghese the influential volume Cosmos, Bios, Theos (1992), collecting reflections from sixty scientists, including Nobel laureates, on God, creation, and the origin of life and consciousness. The volume was cited by Antony Flew among reasons for his later move toward deism. Critics have questioned whether the survey-style format conflates scientific authority with metaphysical competence, and whether Margenau's appeals to quantum indeterminacy as space for divine action overreach the physics. He remains a notable twentieth-century voice arguing for science-religion compatibility from within physics itself.
