Editorial biography

Anthony Kenny (b. 1931) is a British analytic philosopher and historian of philosophy. Trained for the Catholic priesthood at the Venerable English College in Rome, he was ordained in 1955 but left the active priesthood in 1963 after losing confidence in central Catholic doctrines. He subsequently pursued an academic career at Oxford, serving as Master of Balliol College (1978–1989), Warden of Rhodes House, President of the British Academy, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University. Kenny's philosophical work spans Aquinas, Aristotle, Descartes, and Wittgenstein, combining analytic rigor with sensitivity to the history of ideas. On the question of God, he is best known for a sustained, sympathetic agnosticism: he rejects most classical proofs (notably Aquinas's Five Ways, on which he wrote a critical study) yet refuses confident atheism. In The God of the Philosophers and What I Believe he argues that traditional concepts of God—omniscience, timelessness, immutability—face serious incoherence problems, while in Unknown God and The Unknown God he defends agnosticism as the rationally appropriate stance and explores whether the agnostic can pray. Critics from confessional theology (e.g., Brian Davies) contest his readings of Aquinas; from the New Atheist side, he has been faulted for excessive deference to religious sensibility. His work remains influential in analytic philosophy of religion.
