Graham Oppy

Graham Oppy is an Australian philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at Monash University, where he has worked since the late 1980s. Trained in analytic philosophy at the Australian National University and Princeton (PhD 1989), he has become one of the most prolific and rigorous defenders of philosophical atheism and naturalism in the analytic tradition. Oppy's work systematically engages classical and contemporary arguments for God's existence: ontological, cosmological, teleological, moral, and probabilistic. His Ontological Arguments and Belief in God (1995) and Arguing about Gods (2006) are widely regarded as standard reference works on the topic. He defends a parsimony-based naturalism, arguing that naturalistic worldviews are at least as well-supported as theistic ones on shared evidence. He has engaged in extensive dialogue with theistic philosophers including William Lane Craig, Edward Feser, and Kenneth Pearce, often via formal debate volumes. Critics—particularly Christian analytic philosophers—charge that his minimalist naturalism understates the explanatory burdens facing non-theistic metaphysics, especially regarding contingency and consciousness. Oppy has also co-edited major reference works such as the Cambridge History of Atheism (with Joseph Stenberg) and the History of Western Philosophy of Religion (with Nick Trakakis). His style is notable for its irenic tone, technical precision, and refusal to engage in polemic, contrasting sharply with the rhetorical mode of the New Atheists.
