Editorial biography

David Hume (1711–1776) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, and central figure of the Enlightenment. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, he developed his system during a sojourn at La Flèche in France, publishing the Treatise of Human Nature (1739–40), later recast as the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (1748) and Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals (1751). His empiricism radicalized Locke and Berkeley, denying that causal necessity, the self, or induction can be rationally justified beyond habit and custom. Hume's treatment of religion is decisive for modern philosophy of religion. In Section X of the first Enquiry, 'Of Miracles,' he argued that uniform testimony of natural law always outweighs testimony for miracles. The Natural History of Religion (1757) offered a genealogical, psychological account of religion's origins in fear and anthropomorphism. The posthumous Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (1779) systematically dismantled the design argument through the character Philo, while leaving Hume's own position contested—between agnosticism, attenuated deism, and covert atheism. Contemporaries including Thomas Reid and James Beattie attacked his skepticism; Kant credited Hume with awakening him from 'dogmatic slumber.' Modern critics such as John Earman have challenged his miracle argument on Bayesian grounds, while defenders including J. L. Mackie and Antony Flew extended his critiques. Hume remains a foundational figure for naturalist and skeptical approaches to theism.
