Editorial biography
Alvin Plantinga (b. 1932) is an American analytic philosopher central to the late-20th-century revival of philosophy of religion. Educated at Calvin College, Michigan, and Yale, he taught at Wayne State, Calvin College, and the University of Notre Dame, where he held the John A. O'Brien Chair and founded the Center for Philosophy of Religion. In 'God and Other Minds' (1967) he argued that belief in God is rational on parity with belief in other minds. In 'The Nature of Necessity' (1974) and 'God, Freedom, and Evil' (1974) he advanced a modal version of the ontological argument and the influential free-will defense against the logical problem of evil, widely credited with shifting the debate toward evidential formulations. His 'Warrant' trilogy (1993–2000), culminating in 'Warranted Christian Belief', develops proper-functionalist epistemology and defends the claim that Christian belief can be 'properly basic' without inferential evidence. 'Where the Conflict Really Lies' (2011) argues that the deeper conflict is between naturalism and science, presenting his evolutionary argument against naturalism. Critics including Richard Swinburne, Linda Zagzebski, Paul Draper, and Quentin Smith have contested his reformed epistemology, his free-will defense, and the EAAN. Plantinga's work, alongside Nicholas Wolterstorff and William Alston, defines the 'Reformed epistemology' school and remains a touchstone in contemporary debates over religious rationality.
