Editorial biography
Russell Stannard (1931-2022) was a British physicist and theologian who made significant contributions to the science-religion dialogue. As Professor Emeritus of Physics at Open University, he specialized in high-energy nuclear physics while developing a parallel career exploring the intersection of science and faith. His work "Science and the Renewal of Belief" (1982) argued that modern physics, particularly quantum mechanics and relativity theory, opens new possibilities for religious belief rather than undermining it. Stannard advocated for a complementary relationship between scientific and religious worldviews, suggesting that science addresses "how" questions while religion addresses "why" questions. He wrote extensively for both academic and popular audiences, including children's books on science and religion. His approach emphasized that scientific discoveries need not conflict with belief in God, and he critiqued both scientific materialism and religious fundamentalism as inadequate responses to reality's complexity.
