Editorial biography
Thomas Jay Oord (1965-present) is an American philosopher and theologian known for his innovative work in process theology and the problem of evil. A leading voice in open and relational theology, Oord has developed influential theories on divine love and providence, particularly his concept of "essential kenosis," which argues that God's self-giving love is involuntary and essential to the divine nature. This framework addresses the problem of evil by suggesting God cannot unilaterally prevent genuine evil because divine love necessarily provides freedom and agency to creation. His major works include "The Nature of Love: A Theology" (2010) and "The Uncontrolling Love of God" (2015). Oord has significantly influenced contemporary discussions on divine action, miracles, and theodicy. He served as professor at Northwest Nazarene University and continues to shape evangelical and process theological conversations through his writings on God's relationship with creation.
