Roy Abraham Varghese

Roy Abraham Varghese is an Indian-American Catholic lay philosopher and writer working in the science-and-religion field, best known for organizing interdisciplinary symposia bringing together scientists, philosophers, and theologians on theistic questions. His edited volume Cosmos, Bios, Theos (1992, with Henry Margenau) collected statements from numerous Nobel laureates and prominent scientists on God, cosmology, and the origin of life, becoming a frequently cited resource in popular natural-theology debates. The Wonder of the World (2003) presents a cumulative-case argument for theism drawing on cosmology, consciousness, and the nature of life, with endorsements from figures including Antony Flew. Varghese is most widely associated with his role in Flew's late shift toward deism: he co-authored There Is a God (2007) with Flew, an episode that generated significant controversy, with critics including Mark Oppenheimer and Richard Carrier questioning the extent of Flew's actual involvement and Varghese's editorial shaping of the text. He also organized the 2004 symposium where Flew first publicly announced his change of view.
