Editorial biography
Robert Wright (born 1957) is an American journalist and author who has made significant contributions to discussions of religion, morality, and evolutionary psychology. His work The Moral Animal (1994) explores how evolutionary theory illuminates human moral behavior and religious impulses. Wright argues that religious and moral systems can be understood through the lens of natural selection, suggesting that cooperative behaviors and religious beliefs evolved because they enhanced group survival. His later works, including The Evolution of God (2009) and Why Buddhism is True (2017), further develop his naturalistic approach to religious phenomena. Wright's writings bridge scientific materialism and spiritual concerns, proposing that evolutionary psychology can explain the origins of religious belief while maintaining that certain spiritual practices may have pragmatic value. His work has influenced contemporary debates about whether religious and moral experiences can be reconciled with scientific naturalism.
