Editorial biography
Franz M. Wuketits (1955-2018) was an Austrian biologist and philosopher of science who made significant contributions to evolutionary epistemology and its implications for religious belief. As professor at the University of Vienna, he developed a naturalistic philosophy grounded in evolutionary theory that challenged traditional theological perspectives. His work on human biology and cultural evolution explored how religious beliefs emerge as adaptive responses to environmental pressures rather than revelations of transcendent truth. Wuketits argued that understanding humans as evolved biological systems undermines supernatural explanations of human nature and morality. His evolutionary approach to epistemology suggested that our cognitive limitations, shaped by natural selection, make metaphysical claims about God inherently unreliable. Through his extensive writings on evolution and human nature, he advanced a scientific worldview that positioned religious belief as a natural phenomenon to be studied rather than a pathway to ultimate truth.
