James K. Beilby

James K. Beilby is Professor of Systematic and Philosophical Theology at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Trained in analytic philosophy of religion, he is known for his work on the epistemology of religious belief, Christian apologetics, and the thought of Alvin Plantinga. His monograph Epistemology as Theology (2005) offers a sustained interpretation and defense of Plantinga's religious epistemology, including proper functionalism and the warrant trilogy. Beilby has also written widely on the nature, varieties, and methods of Christian apologetics, most notably in Thinking About Christian Apologetics (2011), which surveys evidentialist, presuppositionalist, classical, and Reformed approaches. As an editor, he has shaped several influential multi-view volumes in evangelical philosophy and theology, including Naturalism Defeated? (a collection responding to Plantinga's evolutionary argument against naturalism), The Historical Jesus: Five Views (with Paul Rhodes Eddy), and Four Views on Christianity and Philosophy. With Eddy he co-authored The Jesus Legend, defending the historical reliability of the Synoptic Jesus tradition against mythicist and skeptical reconstructions, drawing on oral tradition and social-memory research. Beilby's work is broadly sympathetic to Reformed epistemology and moderate evidentialism, though critics within analytic philosophy of religion question whether proper functionalism adequately handles religious disagreement and defeaters. He functions primarily as a synthesizer and pedagogical mediator of contemporary debates in Christian philosophy.
