Editorial biography
Mikael Stenmark is a Swedish philosopher of religion and Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Uppsala University. His work focuses on the intersection of science, religion, and rationality, examining how different models of rationality apply across these domains. In "Rationality in Science, Religion, and Everyday Life: A Critical Evaluation of Four Models of Rationality" (1995), Stenmark analyzes and critiques four prominent conceptions of rationality—evidentialism, social practice rationality, contextual rationality, and presumptionism—evaluating their adequacy for understanding rational belief formation in scientific, religious, and everyday contexts. His approach challenges simplistic applications of scientific rationality to religious belief while maintaining that religious beliefs can be rationally justified. Stenmark has made significant contributions to debates about the relationship between science and religion, arguing for a nuanced understanding that avoids both uncritical acceptance and wholesale rejection of religious rationality. His work has influenced contemporary discussions about epistemic justification in philosophy of religion.
