J. P. Moreland

James Porter Moreland (b. 1948) is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Biola University's Talbot School of Theology. Trained in chemistry (University of Missouri), theology (Dallas Theological Seminary), and philosophy (Ph.D. University of Southern California under Dallas Willard), he has become a prominent figure in evangelical analytic philosophy of religion. His Scaling the Secular City (1987) presented a cumulative-case apologetic drawing on cosmological, design, moral, and historical arguments. With William Lane Craig he authored Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview (2003), now a standard textbook for evangelical philosophy programs. Moreland defends substance dualism about mind in Body and Soul (2000, with Scott Rae) and Consciousness and the Existence of God (2008), arguing that the emergence of conscious mental states is best explained by theism rather than naturalism—an updating of the argument from consciousness associated with Robert Adams and Richard Swinburne. He edited The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology (2009) with Craig, gathering major contemporary defenses of theistic arguments. His positions—particularly his anti-naturalism, defense of intelligent design, and substance dualism—have drawn critiques from philosophers such as Graham Oppy, Daniel Dennett, and Andrew Melnyk, who argue physicalist resources adequately explain mind. Moreland has also written on spiritual formation and authored Kingdom Triangle (2007), reflecting integration of analytic apologetics with pastoral concerns.
