Editorial biography
Stephen Law (b. 1960) is a British philosopher specializing in philosophy of religion and critical thinking. He serves as Director of Philosophy at the Royal Institute of Philosophy and editor of the journal Think. Law has made significant contributions to debates on religious belief through his development of the "Evil God Challenge," which argues that the evidence for an omnipotent, omniscient, and perfectly evil God is symmetrical to that for a perfectly good God, thereby undermining traditional theodicies. His work emphasizes applying rigorous philosophical analysis to religious claims and exposing fallacious reasoning in theological arguments. In "Believing Bullshit" (2011), Law examines psychological mechanisms and argumentative strategies that perpetuate irrational beliefs, including religious dogma. His broader philosophical project promotes scientific skepticism and rational inquiry as tools for evaluating metaphysical claims, positioning him as a prominent voice in contemporary atheist philosophy and the critique of religious epistemology.
