Editorial biography

Dan Barker (b. 1949) is an American atheist activist, author, and co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), which he leads jointly with his wife Annie Laurie Gaylor. Trained at Azusa Pacific College, Barker served for nineteen years as an evangelical Christian minister, musician, and traveling preacher before publicly deconverting in 1984. His autobiographical and polemical writings draw on this background to mount popular-level critiques of Christian belief, biblical inerrancy, and the moral character of the God of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. In 'Losing Faith in Faith: From Preacher to Atheist' (1992) and the expanded memoir-treatise 'Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists' (2008), he combines deconversion narrative with arguments from biblical inconsistency, the problem of evil, and the alleged incoherence of divine attributes. 'The Good Atheist' (2011) argues that meaning and purpose are available without theism. Barker is active on the public debate circuit, having engaged figures including William Lane Craig, Dinesh D'Souza, and Richard Swinburne. Critics—both Christian apologists and some academic philosophers of religion—argue that his arguments target popular fundamentalism rather than sophisticated theism and rely on rhetorical rather than technical philosophical analysis. He is best understood as a movement atheist and public communicator rather than a professional philosopher, and his significance lies primarily in legal-secularist activism and popular freethought literature.
