Editorial biography

Bertrand Russell (1872–1970) was a British philosopher, logician, and mathematician central to the founding of analytic philosophy. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he co-authored Principia Mathematica (1910–1913) with Alfred North Whitehead, reshaping the foundations of mathematics and logic. His philosophical career spanned logical atomism, epistemology, philosophy of language, and ethics; he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. On the question of God, Russell was a vocal critic of organized religion and classical theism, though he typically described himself as agnostic on strict philosophical grounds while practically an atheist. His 1927 lecture 'Why I Am Not a Christian' systematically rejected the cosmological, natural-law, design, and moral arguments, and questioned the moral character of Jesus. Essays such as 'Am I an Atheist or an Agnostic?' and 'What Is an Agnostic?' clarified his epistemological position: belief requires evidence, and theistic claims fail that standard. Russell's critique drew on Humean empiricism and his own logical analysis, influencing later analytic philosophy of religion, including A. J. Ayer and contemporary secular philosophers. Critics—including Frederick Copleston in their 1948 BBC debate on the cosmological argument, and later defenders of natural theology such as Alvin Plantinga—have challenged Russell's dismissal of metaphysical reasoning and the principle of sufficient reason. His political activism, pacifism, and advocacy of free inquiry made him a public intellectual whose religious skepticism shaped 20th-century secular thought.
