Editorial biography
Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775-1854) was a German idealist philosopher whose evolving thought significantly shaped theological and philosophical discourse on God. Initially aligned with Fichte's transcendental idealism, Schelling developed his Naturphilosophie, conceiving nature as the unconscious expression of absolute spirit. His System of Transcendental Idealism (1800) posited the absolute as the identity of subject and object, transcending both nature and consciousness. In his middle period, Schelling's philosophy of identity understood God as the absolute indifference point underlying all polarities. His late positive philosophy, developed after 1827, critiqued purely rational approaches to God, emphasizing divine freedom, personality, and the historical dimension of revelation. His Ages of the World drafts and Philosophy of Revelation explored God's self-manifestation through creation and history. Schelling's dynamic conception of God as becoming, his attention to evil and divine suffering, and his integration of mythology and revelation profoundly influenced subsequent theology, particularly through Tillich and process thought.
