Editorial biography

Louis P. Pojman (1935–2005) was an American philosopher who taught at the United States Military Academy at West Point and earlier at the University of Mississippi, after earning a D.Phil. from Oxford and a Th.D. from Union Theological Seminary. He worked primarily in ethics, epistemology, and philosophy of religion, producing influential textbooks and anthologies that shaped undergraduate teaching in the late twentieth century, including Philosophy of Religion: An Anthology and Ethics: Discovering Right and Wrong. Pojman defended a moderate theism and engaged sympathetically with classical theistic arguments while taking objections seriously; he is also known for his work on the ethics of belief, arguing—against doxastic voluntarism—that belief is largely involuntary, a thesis that drew responses from William Alston and others. His monograph Religious Belief and the Will developed this position. In ethics, he defended a non-relativist position and wrote controversially in favor of meritocracy and against affirmative action, sparking debate among colleagues. While his anthologies are praised for breadth and pedagogical clarity, some critics noted that his editorial framings reflected his own commitments. Pojman's lasting influence lies less in original metaphysics than in shaping how a generation of students encountered debates over God's existence, religious epistemology, and moral philosophy.
