Editorial biography
Seyyed Hossein Nasr (1933-) is an Iranian-American philosopher and leading authority on Islamic philosophy, Sufism, and the perennial philosophy. Educated at MIT and Harvard, where he studied under scholars including Harry Wolfson, Nasr has profoundly influenced contemporary understanding of Islamic intellectual traditions in relation to Western thought. His work demonstrates how Islamic philosophy represents a continuous tradition of metaphysical inquiry centered on divine reality, challenging narratives of philosophical decline after classical antiquity. In "Islamic Philosophy from its Origin to the Present," Nasr argues for philosophy's vital role within Islamic civilization as a means of understanding God through both revelation and intellect. His concept of "philosophy in the land of prophecy" positions Islamic thought as uniquely integrating rational inquiry with revealed truth. Nasr's extensive corpus bridges traditional Islamic metaphysics and contemporary philosophical discourse, establishing him as a crucial voice in interfaith dialogue and the philosophy of religion.
