Editorial biography

Stanley N. Gundry is an American evangelical theologian, editor, and publishing executive best known for shaping the influential 'Counterpoints' series at Zondervan, which presents multiple evangelical and broader Christian positions on contested theological questions in side-by-side debate format. Trained in theology and church history (Th.D., Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago), Gundry taught at Moody Bible Institute before joining Zondervan, where he served for decades as Senior Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of academic and reference resources. His editorial work has facilitated debates among evangelical, Reformed, Wesleyan, Catholic, and other traditions on subjects including the millennium, divine foreknowledge, hell, baptism, and women in ministry. Beyond editing, he co-edited the apologetic volume 'Does God Exist? The Craig-Flew Debate,' presenting William Lane Craig's natural-theological case against Antony Flew's then-atheism. Gundry has been associated with the Evangelical Theological Society, where he has occasionally figured in internal debates over the boundaries of evangelical doctrine. Though not primarily known as an original philosophical theologian, his curatorial role in framing intra-Christian dialogue—and in mediating evangelical engagement with analytic philosophy of religion—has made him a significant gatekeeping figure in late-twentieth-century American evangelical thought. His own writings include studies of nineteenth-century revivalism, notably on Dwight L. Moody.
