Editorial biography

Timothy Keller (1950–2023) was an American Presbyterian pastor and apologist, best known as founding minister of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan (1989). Educated at Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary (D.Min.), Keller worked within the Reformed evangelical tradition, drawing especially on Jonathan Edwards, C. S. Lewis, and the neo-Calvinism of Abraham Kuyper and Herman Bavinck.

His apologetic approach addressed educated urban skeptics and emphasized cultural engagement rather than confrontation. The Reason for God (2008) offered a cumulative-case defense of Christianity, responding to objections from suffering, religious exclusivism, science, and biblical reliability, while pressing skeptics to recognize the faith-commitments embedded in secular worldviews. Subsequent works—Making Sense of God (2016), The Prodigal God (2008), and Walking with God through Pain and Suffering (2013)—extended this project into questions of meaning, identity, and theodicy.

Keller's arguments were largely synthetic, popularizing themes from Alvin Plantinga, Charles Taylor, Lesslie Newbigin, and N. T. Wright rather than producing original philosophical theology. Critics from within evangelicalism faulted his accommodationist tone on cultural issues, while secular reviewers (notably in the New York Times) questioned the rigor of his anti-secularist arguments. Progressive theologians criticized his complementarianism and traditional sexual ethics. Despite these debates, Keller remained among the most widely read Christian apologists of the early twenty-first century, particularly influential among professionals and skeptics drawn to a non-fundamentalist defense of orthodoxy.
