George H. Smith

George H. Smith (1949–2022) was an American libertarian philosopher and author best known for his sustained defense of atheism in Atheism: The Case Against God (1974), a work that became influential within the American freethought movement. Self-educated and unaffiliated with any university, Smith developed his arguments primarily through independent writing, lecturing for the Institute for Humane Studies, Cato Institute, and Libertarian Party-affiliated venues. His central thesis maintains that the concept of God is incoherent or unsupported by evidence, and that the burden of proof rests on the theist; he framed atheism in the broad sense as the absence of belief in any god rather than as a positive denial. Drawing on classical empiricist and rationalist sources, Smith combined epistemological critique of theistic proofs with a moral and political case against religious authority, integrating his atheism with Spencerian and Randian libertarian commitments. Subsequent works include Atheism, Ayn Rand, and Other Heresies (1991) and Why Atheism? (2000). His writing has been criticized by analytic philosophers of religion for relying on older formulations of theistic arguments rather than engaging contemporary reformed epistemology or Bayesian natural theology (e.g., Plantinga, Swinburne), and by some atheist philosophers for conflating definitional and evidential strategies. Nevertheless, Smith remains a frequently cited reference within popular American atheist literature and the libertarian freethought tradition.
