Editorial biography

Elliott Sober (b. 1948) is Hans Reichenbach Professor and William F. Vilas Research Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Trained at Harvard under Hilary Putnam, he became a central figure in analytic philosophy of biology, known for rigorous Bayesian and likelihoodist analyses of evolutionary theory, parsimony, and scientific inference. His early monographs (The Nature of Selection, 1984; Reconstructing the Past, 1988) helped establish philosophy of biology as a discipline.

Sober's work on the question of God centers on the logic of design arguments. In Evidence and Evolution (2008) and earlier papers, he reformulates intelligent-design and fine-tuning arguments in terms of likelihood comparisons, arguing that design hypotheses, to be testable, require auxiliary assumptions about the designer's goals and abilities that are typically unavailable. He contends that Paley's design argument and contemporary ID arguments fail not because they are unscientific in principle but because they lack the comparative probabilistic structure needed for evidential confirmation. Sober has similarly criticized fine-tuning arguments for ignoring observation-selection effects.

His position is methodologically agnostic: he denies that biology refutes theism, but holds that standard theistic arguments do not meet evidential standards. Critics including Alvin Plantinga and Richard Swinburne have contested his probabilistic framework, while ID proponents such as William Dembski have responded to his likelihood critiques. Sober's contribution lies in clarifying what evidence design hypotheses would need.
