Editorial biography

Alexander R. Pruss is a Canadian-American analytic philosopher at Baylor University, where he has been a professor of philosophy since 2007. Trained originally as a mathematician (PhD, University of British Columbia, 1996) before completing a second doctorate in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh (2001), Pruss combines formal rigor with metaphysical argumentation in the broadly Leibnizian and Thomistic traditions. A Roman Catholic, he is widely regarded as one of the most prolific defenders of cosmological reasoning in contemporary philosophy of religion. His monograph 'The Principle of Sufficient Reason: A Reassessment' (2006) offers a sustained defense of the PSR against Humean and van Inwagen-style modal objections, while 'Necessary Existence' (2018, with Joshua Rasmussen) develops a contemporary modal cosmological argument for a necessary being. 'Infinity, Causation, and Paradox' (2018) advances 'causal finitism' as a metaphysical thesis that the causal history of any event must be finite, with implications for kalam-style arguments. Pruss also writes on philosophy of probability, sexual ethics, and applied bioethics. His positions have drawn critical engagement from Graham Oppy, Peter van Inwagen, and other naturalist and agnostic philosophers, particularly over the modal status of the PSR and the coherence of causal finitism. He maintains a long-running philosophy blog that has become an influential venue for Catholic analytic metaphysics.
