Editorial biography
John D. Barrow (1952–2020) was a British cosmologist, mathematician, and prolific popular-science writer, Professor of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge and director of the Millennium Mathematics Project. Trained in astrophysics at Oxford under Dennis Sciama, he held positions at Sussex before moving to Cambridge in 1999. His most influential contribution to debates on God and cosmology is The Anthropic Cosmological Principle (1986, with Frank J. Tipler), which surveyed and systematized weak, strong, and final formulations of anthropic reasoning. The book became a touchstone for fine-tuning arguments deployed by both theistic apologists and proponents of multiverse explanations. Barrow himself maintained a careful agnostic-leaning stance, emphasizing the limits of scientific explanation and the philosophical openness of cosmological questions rather than committing to design inferences. Subsequent works—The World within the World, The Book of Nothing, The Constants of Nature, and New Theories of Everything—probed the structure of physical law, the status of vacuum and infinity, and the prospects and limits of unified physical theories. He was awarded the Templeton Prize in 2006, recognizing his contributions to the dialogue between science and religion, a recognition that drew criticism from Richard Dawkins and others who objected to Templeton's program. Barrow's writings remain widely cited in fine-tuning and multiverse literature in philosophy of religion.
