John W. Loftus

John W. Loftus is an American philosopher of religion and former evangelical Christian minister who became one of the more prolific contemporary popular critics of Christianity. He studied under William Lane Craig at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, earning master's degrees in theology and philosophy of religion, and pursued doctoral work at Marquette University. After a deconversion in the early 1990s, Loftus turned his apologetic training against Christianity, founding the blog Debunking Christianity and authoring or editing a series of widely circulated critiques. His central methodological contribution is the Outsider Test for Faith (OTF), which argues that believers should evaluate their inherited religion with the same critical skepticism they apply to rival traditions; this proposal has provoked substantive responses from Christian philosophers including Victor Reppert, Randal Rauser, and David Marshall, who dispute its assumptions about cultural conditioning and epistemic parity. Loftus also edits collaborative anti-apologetic volumes (The Christian Delusion, The End of Christianity, Christianity in the Light of Science) bringing together biblical scholars, scientists, and philosophers. His God or Godless? co-authored debate with Randal Rauser exemplifies his preference for direct dialectical exchange. Critics within professional philosophy of religion have questioned the rigor of his arguments compared to academic atheists like Graham Oppy or J. L.
