Randal Rauser

Randal Rauser is a Canadian analytic theologian and philosopher of religion, Professor of Historical Theology at Taylor Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta. He earned his PhD at King's College London under Colin Gunton, with a dissertation on the doctrine of God in Wolfhart Pannenberg and Robert Jenson. Working within evangelical Protestantism but engaging extensively with analytic philosophy of religion, Rauser has carved out a distinctive niche as a Christian apologist who is sharply critical of popular evangelical apologetics, biblical literalism, and what he regards as the moral and rhetorical excesses of figures such as William Lane Craig and the New Atheists alike. His books include 'You're Not as Crazy as I Think' (2011), 'The Swedish Atheist, the Scuba Diver and Other Apologetic Rabbit Trails' (2012), and 'God or Godless?' (2013), co-authored with atheist John Loftus as a structured debate. In 'Is the Atheist My Neighbor?' (2015) he challenges the evangelical 'rebellion thesis' regarding unbelief, arguing for charitable engagement with non-believers. Rauser also writes extensively on theodicy, divine command theory, and biblical violence, often defending non-literalist readings of texts depicting divine-sanctioned violence. His dialogical and self-critical approach has earned both appreciation and frustration: secular interlocutors note his willingness to concede ground, while conservative apologists criticize his theological revisions.
