Editorial biography
John Lennox (b. 1943, Armagh, Northern Ireland) is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and Emeritus Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College. Trained at Cambridge (PhD) and Oxford (DPhil, DSc), his mathematical research lies in group theory, but he is publicly best known as a Christian apologist engaging the New Atheism. In works such as God's Undertaker (2007), God and Stephen Hawking (2011), Gunning for God (2011), and Seven Days That Divide the World (2011), Lennox argues that contemporary science—particularly cosmological fine-tuning, the rational intelligibility of the universe, and the information content of biological systems—is more consistent with theism than with metaphysical naturalism. He has publicly debated Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Peter Singer, and Michael Shermer. Lennox draws on Polanyi, Plantinga, and the Intelligent Design movement's critiques of naturalism, while distancing himself from young-earth creationism and from strong ID claims about specific biological mechanisms. Critics, including evolutionary biologists and philosophers such as Jerry Coyne and Stephen Law, argue that Lennox misconstrues methodological naturalism, overstates the explanatory limits of evolution, and conflates the success of science with theistic warrant. His work is widely read in popular apologetics but has had limited reception in academic philosophy of religion, where his arguments are seen as reformulations of established natural-theology positions rather than original contributions.
