Editorial biography

Peter Kreeft (b. 1937) is an American Catholic philosopher and a longtime professor of philosophy at Boston College and The King's College. A convert from the Dutch Reformed tradition to Roman Catholicism in his college years, Kreeft draws heavily on Thomas Aquinas, Augustine, Pascal, C. S. Lewis, and J. R. R. Tolkien. He is among the most prolific contemporary popular apologists, with more than seventy books spanning natural theology, ethics, philosophy of religion, and Christian spirituality.

Kreeft's apologetic method is broadly Thomist and cumulative: he reformulates classical theistic arguments (the five ways, moral argument, argument from desire, argument from religious experience) for non-specialist readers, often in dialogue or Socratic format. His Handbook of Christian Apologetics, co-authored with Ronald Tacelli, surveys twenty arguments for God and addresses standard objections including the problem of evil. He frequently engages C. S. Lewis as a model and defends ecumenical "mere Christianity" while remaining doctrinally Catholic.

Academic philosophers of religion have noted that Kreeft's work is pedagogical and synthetic rather than original scholarship; critics from analytic philosophy of religion and from secular humanism (e.g., responses adjacent to Antony Flew, Michael Martin) regard several of his formulations as too compressed. Within Catholic intellectual culture, however, he is widely read as a clear expositor of the Thomist case for theism and as a bridge figure between Aquinas, Pascal, and modern apologetics.
