Editorial biography

Leslie Stephen (1832–1904) was an English philosopher, literary critic, and biographer who became one of the leading public exponents of Victorian agnosticism. Ordained in the Church of England and a fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he relinquished his orders in the 1860s following a loss of belief shaped by reading Mill, Comte, and Darwin, and by historical-critical scrutiny of Christian doctrine. He moved to London as a journalist and man of letters, editing the Cornhill Magazine and founding the Dictionary of National Biography.

His philosophical reputation rests on essays collected in 'Essays on Freethinking and Plainspeaking' (1873) and 'An Agnostic's Apology' (1893), and on his 'History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century' (1876), which traced the deist controversy and the genealogy of modern unbelief. Stephen argued that traditional theistic proofs—cosmological, teleological, and moral—were inconclusive, and that the honest response to evidential underdetermination was suspended judgment rather than fideism or dogmatic atheism. His 'Science of Ethics' (1882) sought to ground morality on evolutionary and sociological foundations independent of theology.

Allied with T. H. Huxley, John Tyndall, and W. K. Clifford in the agnostic movement, Stephen was criticised by theologians such as James Martineau and later by Catholic apologists for reducing religion to inadequate evidence. He is the father of Virginia Woolf, and his arguments anticipate twentieth-century evidentialist critiques of religion.
