Editorial biography

Paul Tillich (1886–1965) was a German-American Protestant theologian and philosopher whose work mediated between existentialism, German idealism, and Christian theology. Trained at Berlin, Tübingen, Halle, and Breslau, he served as a chaplain in World War I, an experience that shaped his theology of crisis and meaning. He taught at Marburg, Dresden, Leipzig, and Frankfurt, where he was among the first non-Jewish academics dismissed by the Nazi regime in 1933. Emigrating to the United States, he held positions at Union Theological Seminary, Harvard, and the University of Chicago. Tillich's central contribution is the reconception of God not as a being among beings but as 'being-itself' or 'the ground of being,' a move developed in his three-volume Systematic Theology (1951–1963) and popularized in The Courage to Be (1952) and Dynamics of Faith (1957). He defined faith as 'ultimate concern' and proposed a 'method of correlation' linking existential questions with theological symbols. His thought was criticized from opposing sides: traditionalists such as Gustaf Wingren faulted his abandonment of a personal God, while atheist readers (notably Sidney Hook) judged his God-talk evacuated of cognitive content. His influence extended to John A. T. Robinson's Honest to God controversy and to liberation and feminist theologians. Debates continue over whether his ontology preserves Christian theism or dissolves into philosophical pantheism.
