Editorial biography

Dewi Zephaniah Phillips (1934–2006) was a Welsh philosopher of religion who held the Rush Rhees Chair at the University of Wales, Swansea, and the Danforth Chair at Claremont Graduate University. A student of Rush Rhees and inheritor of Wittgenstein's later philosophy, Phillips developed a distinctive grammatical approach to religious belief that resisted both classical theistic metaphysics and reductive atheism. In works such as The Concept of Prayer (1965), Death and Immortality (1970), Religion Without Explanation (1976), Faith After Foundationalism (1988), and The Problem of Evil and the Problem of God (2004), he argued that philosophy should describe rather than justify religious practices, treating concepts like God, prayer, and eternal life as integral to particular forms of life rather than as quasi-empirical hypotheses. His refusal of theodicy—on the grounds that standard defenses trivialize suffering and distort the grammar of divine love—drew sharp criticism from analytic theists such as Richard Swinburne and Alvin Plantinga, who accused him of crypto-atheism or non-realism. Phillips repeatedly denied the charge, insisting his work clarified rather than reduced religious meaning. Allied with Peter Winch, Norman Malcolm, and the so-called Swansea school, he remains a principal figure in Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion, though debates persist over whether his account preserves the cognitive content of theistic belief.
