Editorial biography
Karen Armstrong (b. 1944) is a British historian of religion and former Roman Catholic nun whose comparative studies trace the development of monotheistic concepts of God across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. After leaving religious life and studying English literature at Oxford, she turned to writing on religion, achieving wide influence with A History of God (1993), which narrates the changing human imagining of the divine from Abraham through modern fundamentalism. In The Case for God (2009) she argues that classical and medieval theology understood God apophatically — as an ineffable reality approached through practice, ritual, and silence — and that modern literalism, on both theistic and New Atheist sides, distorts this older grammar. Her work emphasizes religion as orthopraxy and compassion, anchored in her Charter for Compassion initiative. Armstrong has been praised for her synthetic accessibility and criticized on several fronts: scholars including Robert Wright, Hugh Fitzgerald, and reviewers in academic journals have challenged her selective historiography, harmonizing reading of Islam, and downplaying of doctrinal content; New Atheists such as Richard Dawkins have accused her apophaticism of redefining God into vacuity, while traditionalists charge her with a perennialist flattening of confessional differences. She nonetheless remains an influential popular voice in interfaith discourse and the science-and-religion conversation.
