Editorial biography
William J. Abraham (1947–2021) was a Northern Irish-American philosopher of religion and analytic theologian who held the Albert Cook Outler Chair in Wesley Studies at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. Trained at Queen's University Belfast, Asbury Theological Seminary, and Oxford (DPhil under Basil Mitchell), he became a central figure in the emergence of 'analytic theology' as a recognized subfield. His early work, notably Divine Revelation and the Limits of Historical Criticism (1982) and An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion (1985), defended the rational credibility of revelation against post-Humean skepticism. In Canon and Criterion in Christian Theology (1998) he argued that the Christian canon should be understood as a means of grace rather than an epistemic foundation, distinguishing canonicity from criteriology—a thesis that drew sustained debate among Protestant and Catholic theologians. The Agnostic Inquirer (2006), co-authored with Frederick D. Aquino and Jerry L. Walls, argues that revelation can be epistemically accessible to the inquiring agnostic. His four-volume Divine Agency and Divine Action (2017–2021) offered an ambitious analytic-theological account of God's action in history. Abraham critiqued classical foundationalism and engaged Alvin Plantinga's reformed epistemology, while himself drawing fire for blurring lines between philosophy and confessional theology. He co-edited the Oxford Handbook of the Epistemology of Theology.
