Editorial biography
Phillip E. Johnson (1940-2019) was an American law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who became the principal architect and strategist of the Intelligent Design (ID) movement. Trained at Harvard and the University of Chicago Law School, he clerked for Chief Justice Earl Warren before joining Berkeley's faculty in 1967, specializing in criminal law. Following a personal religious conversion in midlife, he turned his attention to evolutionary biology, arguing in Darwin on Trial (1991) that Darwinism functions less as a scientific theory than as a philosophical commitment to methodological naturalism that excludes design hypotheses a priori. He framed the debate as one of evidentiary standards and pursued what he called the 'wedge strategy,' articulated in The Wedge of Truth (2000), aimed at unseating naturalism in academic culture. Johnson co-founded the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture, mentoring figures such as Michael Behe, William Dembski, and Stephen Meyer. His arguments were sharply criticized by biologists including Stephen Jay Gould, Kenneth Miller, and Eugenie Scott, who charged him with misrepresenting evolutionary science and recycling creationist tropes under new branding; the 2005 Kitzmiller v. Dover ruling held that ID is not science. Johnson's later writings also drew controversy for endorsing HIV/AIDS denialism. He nonetheless reshaped late-twentieth-century debates on science, religion, and public education.
